The BEST Herbal Tea Blend for Headache Relief

If you get frequent headaches like I do, you’ve probably tried just about anything to give you relief quickly. Some things work, some absolutely don’t. It can be frustrating.

I’ve recently been getting into natural remedies and herbalism to help support my overall well being and I’ve done a lot of testing out combinations that work.

This combination of easy to find herbal teas relieves my headache quickly EVERY time and leaves me feeling great because I know I’m not consuming pharmaceuticals that could potentially be harmful.

Let’s talk more about how the 4 herbs in this herbal blend can help you treat a headache & relieve tension.

Ginger Root

When most people think of ginger, the first thing that comes to mind is nausea relief and digestive support, but you may not think of it as an herbal supplement to support with headaches. Ginger root contains a natural oil which treats inflammation (i.e. the cause of that headache), and can be used to treat nausea and vomiting. This herb is great with severe headaches that may be causing nausea (i.e. migraines). Ginger can increase seratonin levels in your brain, which helps reduce inflammation & constricting blood vessels, helping you relax and relieving pain. Plus, the flavor of ginger adds such a nice flavor to this blend. It’s one of my favorites in so many of my herbal tea blends.

Stinging Nettle/Nettle Leaf

Nettle leaf (also known as stinging nettle) is our next ingredient in this blend. This herb has anti-inflammatory properties that help relieve pain due to headaches, sore muscles, and joints. It also has so many other uses such as managing blood sugar & blood pressure levels, supporting digestive health, soothing allergies & skin irritations, treating UTIs, boosting your immune system, and more. This guy doesn’t have the best smell or taste, in my opinion, so I like to combine it with other more flavorful herbs, but I incorporate it in herbal teas often because of all of its healthy properties.

Lavender

Lavender has long been used as a soothing medicinal herb for relaxation and headache relief. Its relaxing aroma calms the nervous system, which can help relieve the stress and tension associated with headaches. It also has mild analgesic properties that may relieve pain. I love using it to make teas and in baking and cooking because of its soothing properties and because its flavor combines well with so many other flavors (i.e. lemon, chocolate, etc.). I even used it in a frozen treat recipe that you can find here.

Peppermint/spearmint

Peppermint and spearmint have antioxidants & also possess anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce pain and provide a calming effect. Plus, the pleasant and cooling flavor combines nicely with the other herbs in this blend.

Now for the recipe. Just combine 1-2 tsp ginger root, 2 tsp stinging nettle/nettle leaf, 2 tsp lavender, & 1-2 tsp of spearmint or peppermint in your favorite tea pot (this is one of my faves). Steep for about 3 minutes, serve, relax, and you’ll find that you feel better in no time.
